Language is talking. Noam Chomsky battles that more than some other qualities, the ownership of language recognizes people from creatures (Chomsky). We will compose a custom paper test on What is Language? or on the other hand any comparative point just for you Request Now He contended that to get mankind, one must comprehend the idea of language that makes us human. Language isn't only the capacity to talk, rather, it is the ability to create sounds that imply certain implications and to comprehend or decipher the sounds delivered by others (Chomsky, p. 2). Hence, in the event that one don't have the foggiest idea about the language, the expressions of that language will be for the most part unfathomable. Language is beyond what discourse as hard of hearing individuals can create dialects without words similarly as ordinary people produce and comprehend verbal dialects. Language is the thing that makes individuals sees one another, it is makes countries to join for a shared objectives and it is the very establishment of progress and accomplishments. In this way understanding language is a fundamental assignment that each one must embrace. The world has maybe a great many distinctive language that for a large portion of us we can just talk five or the most is ten of these dialects. Our restricted information on such dialects is preventing us to accomplish our objectives to live in harmony, solidarity, and, in participation with one another. Etymological investigation accordingly is a basic advance towards this reason for accomplishing, solidarity, collaboration, and shared comprehension with one another. Recognizing what is Language Knowing a language includes comprehending what sounds are in that language. It implies that when one isn't an English speaker the person can't substitute the way to express a specific word to cause it to show up the word is articulated in English. Taking for instance the case introduced by Chomsky, he noticed that French individuals regularly articulated the English word various stuff as though they were spelled as â€Å"Zis† and â€Å"Zat. † knowing the sound arrangement of the language along these lines incorporates something other than the record of sounds. It includes realizing which sounds may begin a word, end a word, and follow one another. As indicated by Chomsky, knowing the sounds and the examples of sounds add up to just a single piece of our semantic information. While the facts may confirm that specific arrangement of sounds indicate certain ideas or implications, if so, realizing a language isn't a simple undertaking. One needs to get familiar with the groupings of sound in the event that the person needs to learn language. That is, the words in that language which is likewise the sound successions that are identified with specific implications. Hence, in the event that one don't have the foggiest idea about a language, the individual in question can't comprehend the significance of the words or sentences of that language, on the grounds that the connection among discourse and sounds is emotional or a discretionary one. Obtaining a language in this way needs one to distinguish that the sounds spoke to by the letters imply the idea. Gesture based communications The connection between structure (sound) and the importance (idea) of a word is genuine even in gesture based communications (Chomsky, p. 5). It is suspicious somebody who is utilizing Chinese gesture based communication CSL) can appreciate the message of the person who is utilizing American Sign Language (ASL), the equivalent with the other. The creator noticed that not all the developments of the hands uncover the significance of the motion in communications through signing. He call attention to that there is some stable imagery in language, which is the words whose elocution propose implications. These words or sounds in a language once in a while impersonate different sounds, in any case, despite the fact that there might be a few sounds that are like the articles or activities they allude to, the sounds contrast from language to language on the grounds that every language has its own specific arrangement of language. In any case, Martin Hann underscored that in understanding the message of the language both the sender and the recipient needs shared implications of the signals tones, and other correspondence images (Hann, M. . Hann called attention to that all the data and messages that we get is being composed by our brains into a psychological guide that compare to our impression of the real world. The Importance of Sound Sequences somewhat, the creator noticed that some specific sound groupings appear to identify with a specific idea. Refering to as model, the English words starting gl, for example, glare, flicker, sparkle, sparkle, polished, coat, gleam, glimpse, etc, appeared to be identified with sight. A Devastating Civil War - Free Essay Example

Decades of growing political tension around the issue of slavery between North and South culminated in the form of Civil War on April 12, 1861 when Confederate artillery opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina which belonged to the Federal government. The war was fought from 1861 to 1865. It was a conflict which divided the United States into two parts: Union (North) which was led by President Abraham Lincoln and the Confederacy (South) which was commanded by Jefferson Davis. All the states involved in the war supported their sides valiantly. Both groups were eager to win and establish their way of law and order in the country. However, people in all states specially those residing in the Southern states such as Texas etc had to face enormous difficulties in this political based ruthless war which not only led to the bloodshed of thousands of men, women and children but also caused intense damage to the infrastructure and economy of US. In the US Civil War life in the Confederate states (South) was disastrous and the state of Alabama provided significant economic and military support for the Confederacy which it joined in 1861 after seceding from the Union. Life in the South during the Civil War was a time of almost universal suffering and sacrifice. For almost one million Southern men fought for the Confederacy, their lives were mixture of adventures and hardships. About one third of them aged between eighteen and twenty five. Just a few days into the war, these young men faced homesickness combined with reality of war: cold, hunger, bloodshed and boredom often interrupted with a great risk of death. However, not all men had to endure the tough sufferings of fighting. The Exemption clause in Confederacys Conscription act allowed thousands of urban men such as blacksmiths, shoe makers and tanners to stay back home due to keep the daily business and activity alive in Southern cities such as New Orleans and Montgomery. Before the Civil War, women were seldom seen as head of families. They lived under protection of their husbands or fathers and were expected to marry, have children and take care of the home. However, with the men on the battlefields, the women in the South assumed new responsibilities which were strenuous for them. They worked the fields on farms, supervised plantations, at ordinance factories , became teachers in schools and plenty of them served as nurses in the army to help wounded soldiers recover. They also got involved in activities such as making care packages for the soldiers in the war which consisted of food, clothing, blankets, boots and other essentials. During the war, many slaves armed themselves and started terrorizing white women and children since there were very few white men to stop them. A Louisiana native Kate Stone described in her journal that once three black Negroes armed with weapons broke into their house only to terrorize, loot and vandalize. (Yancey 40). This created a sense of isolation and terror among women. The South also suffered immense food shortages. The Union had imposed a complete blockade on Southern ports which stopped the flow of goods. It also faced heavy inflation levels due to extreme printing of money. Faced with the fear of not being able to afford what they needed, people started hoarding which made goods more valuable and added to the inflation. For example, flour which costed $6 a barrel in 1861 sold for $500 a barrel in 1865 (Yancey 22). The state of Alabama provided vital economic support for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Just like today, the economy of the state was mostly based on agriculture. Alabama was known as ?The Cotton King as cotton was grown in large amounts which helped in earning huge sums of money due to its high value as it is a cash crop. Although Union imposed a blockade in the South, cotton grown in Alabama was exported to Europe as raw material which helped to earn funds. Alabama also had fourteen mills by 1860, with the largest ones being in Tallassee and Prattville. During the war, the Tallassee mills supplied cloth for uniforms for the Confederate Army, and in 1863 a carbine rifle manufacturing facility also was constructed there. Alabamas antebellum metal manufacturing industries also played an important role. These factories not only provided jobs but manufactured iron sheets, tin and copper products agricultural and domestic consumption (Encyclopedia of Alabama). During the civil war , these factories provided pig iron to the ordinance factories in Selma to make weapons. Therefore, Alabama utilized all of its resources to increase Confederacys earnings. Alabamas military services for the confederacy are perhaps the most important of all. The Selma Ordnance and Naval Foundry, also known as the Selma Naval Foundry and Ironworks and the Selma Arsenal and Gun Works, was a leading manufacturing center for the South during the Civil War. It was a manufacturing depot for ammunition, shot, shell, canon, powder, canteens, and clothing. The ordinance factories also produced canons meant for coastal defense such as 6.4 and 11 of the 11 inch Brooke canons (Sledge 122). The gunboats Gains, Selma and Morgan and the famous CSS Tennessee were built and outfitted in Selma. These Confederate ships took part in the Battle of Mobile Bay. The worlds first submarine to sink a warship CSS Hunley was also built and tested in Mobile, Alabama. H.L Hunley with the help of an engineer McClintock who was from New Orleans designed two submarines. H.L Hunley imported sorely needed guns and ammunition from Cuba for the submarine (Walker 10). Manpower was Alabamas most significant military contribution to the Confederacy. Alabama sent more than 120,000 soldiers to fight and 29% of the men never returned home (Gillon 98). Thus it outlines, Alabamas big sacrifice for the South. Alabama produced one of the finest Confederate officers in both the army and navy. Alabama born Lt. Colonel John Pelham was given the title ?Gallant Pelham after the Battle of Fredericksburg due to his superb commanding techniques (Encyclopedia of Alabama). The famous war hero, General James Longstreet was one of most prominent generals in the Confederate army. Although he was not a native Alabamian, he moved to Morgan County in Northern Alabama with his mot her after his fathers death (Wert 25). Alabama provided the Confederacy with four major generals: John H. Forney, Henry D Calyton, Robert Rodes, Jones M Withers and commissioned 36 Brigadier Generals such as John Pegram and Alexander Peter Stewart (Alabama Department of Archives and History). The Civil War was devastating for the South. It left all states including Alabama in state of ruin. Approximately 620,000 people died in the war including the non combatants. People suffered all sorts of pain on both sides either by struggling to survive or by loosing loved ones. The State of Alabama performed a vital role and its sacrifices and services for the Confederate cause are priceless. The Civil War left the whole nation in shock and we should all vow to never let history repeat itself.

The Aristotle And Immanuel Kant - 1655 Words

The philosophers Aristotle and Immanuel Kant express the sources of virtuous and dutiful actions in a similar, yet different way. Both philosophers agree that an action has moral worth, when it is preformed for its own sake. However, the difference contains a more significant meaning. Aristotle believes that pleasure can be included when preforming an action; while Kant believes that a duty is preforming the right action without the need of inclinations. In this paper, I will present a similarity and difference between Aristotle’s concept of a virtuous act and Kant’s discussion of dutiful action. In The Nicomachean Ethics, The source of a virtuous action happens when your passions and thoughts are balanced. It is balanced when there is†¦show more content†¦Furthermore, Aristotle believes when the virtuous person does an action only through the sake of it self there is no other means to the end and one will eventually become virtuous. However, when the action is preformed for the sake of something else, then a person will not reach the highest form of virtue. The reason for this is when the action that is preformed for the sake of something else, then it will not reach complete happiness because it will always desire more. Therefore, happiness is the highest act of virtue because it is the only end in every action we preform. A person that preforms an action for the sake of being happy requires many steps to eventually reach the stage of happiness. When there are steps involved to reach happiness, then the action is preformed for the sake of something else and not in itself. Such as a person who wants to eat healthier because their end motive is to be happy. Therefore, the action is not preformed for the sake of just to eat healthy but to reach happiness. However, to become virtuous, a person will preform actions that make them virtuous with a firm and unchangeable character. It is a skill that is made through a habit, Aristotle states, â€Å"legislators make the citizens good by preforming habits in them†(NE, P.23), such as preforming acts of bravery. Anthem By Ayn Rand Essay Example For Students

Anthem By Ayn Rand Essay Imagine a world where the individual has been repressed to the point that theword I no longer exists. Now, as hellish as that sounds, imagine that youare the only one who has the capability to break free from the iron fists thatare choking you and your brothers. This is the life of Equality 7-2521, theprincipal character and narrator of Ayn Rands Anthem. Anthem takes place inthe dark ages of the future, in a totally collectivized world. This culture hasregressed to conditions reminiscent of Ancient Greece and the European DarkAges. In the midst of fear and subordination, one man stands alone. Equality7-2521 is not like his brothers. He is able think, create and defy. This makeshim extremely dangerous. He holds the threat of change in his hands and hisgovernment will stop at nothing to take it from him. Equalitys societyrepresses him because they are afraid of those that threaten the establishedorder. One major catalyst for change is intelligence. Equality displays evidenceof genius a t a young age. We, Equality 7-2521, were not happyin theHome of the Students. It was not that the learning was too hard for us. Itwastoo easy (Rand 16). In Equalitys society, it is evil to be differentfrom ones brothers, let alone to be better than they are. He is taught at anearly age to be ashamed of his intellectual superiority. This is a sin, to beborn with a head which is too quick (Rand 16). This device of suppression bymeans of shame was used in an attempt to stifle geniuses and, hence, pacify hissocietys fear of change. As Equality grew, he confirmed their fears. Duringhis lifetime he made many revelations and discoveries. His most profoundbreakthrough was his re-invention of electricity. We, Equality 7-2521, havediscovered a new power of nature. (Rand 54). He produced a primitive lightbulb. He wanted to use his invention to better his world. To the misfortune ofhis society, they loathed this new power. If they had accepted his ideasEquality would have been the literal and f igurative bringer of light (Gladstein43). Unfortunately for Equality, as well as his society, his discovery metviolent opposition and his brothers were not able to benefit from hisintelligence. Genius has historically been repressed. Geniuses of our past havebeen ostracized, punished, and martyred for presenting ideas that eventuallybettered their societies. Equality is no different. Equality 7-2521 is acreator and inventor in the tradition of Galileo, Edison, and Einstein (Gladstein27). These real-life geniuses dared to violate their societys norms andeventually their ideas were accepted. Like in Equalitys fictional culture,real-life societies have tended to ignore the ideas of solitary geniuses(McDonald 2). His ideas were swept aside violently, and his society remainedunchanged. Self-interest leads to the defiance of unjust restrictions. Equalitys government prohibits individual action. No one is allowed to doanything on their own. There is no transgression blacker than to think ordo alone(Rand 11). Equalitys defiance of his governments laws set himapart from his brothers. The condition of the Palace of Corrective Detention isdemonstrative of the unquestioning obedience of his brothers. It is easy toescapethere are no guardsThere is no reason to have guards, for men havenever defied the Councils so far as to escape from whatever place they wereordered to be (Rand 73). Unlike his brothers, Equality had the individualstrength to disobey the laws of his government. By questioning authority he tookan interest in himself and was liberated. The noblest human purpose is topursue enlightened self-interest and only those the follow that course canemerge aschampions (McDonald 2). Equalitys government had tried tocontain him from day one. Authorities cannot control him because he has anindependent mind. This totally collectiviz ed society has no powerthe individual(Branden 112). His self-interest allows him to actas independently as his surroundings would permit. Although he is enlightened byhis self-interest, he is never free from the shackles of guilt his society hasplaced upon him. No matter how freethinking Equality is, his nature is stillshaped by his society (Kelly 1). However this guilt did not stop him from actingindependently and constantly challenging the laws of his culture. Creativity isa main staple needed in order for change to take place. Equality has somehowbeen able to escape the suppression of creativity that is so deeply ingrained inhis culture. Equality is not the only person who is able to transgress in orderto create. One of his brothers, International 4-8818, is a natural artist and ispunished in an attempt to stifle his talents. They were not liked becausetheydrew pictures and theymade men laugh (Rand 27). Their governmentstrictly prohibits this sort of creativity. It is only our br others in theHome of the Artists who are permitted to draw pictures(Rand 27). Eventhough both men, Equality and International, are very talented and intelligent, they are both assigned to be street sweepers among pale boy with half abrain(Rand 17). These men were kept from sharing their gifts with theirsociety. Their society feels that those talents need to be suppressed in orderto preserve the established state of their society. They are correct in thatassumption. Creativity and individualism inevitably lead to change. .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 , .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 .postImageUrl , .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 , .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747:hover , .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747:visited , .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747:active { border:0!important; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747:active , .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747 .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uedd8b6056f98dd9a1bcc72e2052fd747:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Student Athletes EssayIndividualism was the creative power revolutionizing the world (Branden12). Repression of creativity and individualism are a perfect way to inhibitsocial change. Without creativity Equalitys society will not be improvedbecause only the self-creative can enrich society (Kavanagh 1). A collectivizedsociety cannot benefit from that which only the independent mind cancreate (Branden 112). Unless a society can accept and embrace creativity,it will remain unchanged. Equalitys society is extremely afraid of inquiry. They are petrified of anyone that is able to question and challenge what theyare taught. Equality 7-2521 is perceived as a threat to the establishedorder (Gladstein 35). Equality was ostracized, punished, and nearly killedfor presenting an idea to the Council of Scholars. His interest in thescientific world had led him to a monumental discovery: electricity. He wasable, through experimentation, to understand this new force, and he eventuallyconstructed a primitive light bulb. Equality had convinced himself that hisdiscovery was so great that if he were to present it to the Council of Scholars, all his transgressions would be forgiven and his invention would be embraced. Hepresents it to the council only to arouse fear and hatred in the hearts of thescholars. The wire glowed. But terror struck the men of theCouncil(Rand 78). This intense fear of new ideas had led the Council ofScholars to take measures to prevent these types of discoveries to be made bythe common man. Children were tau ght at a young age not to question theirsurroundings. The Council of Scholars has said that there are nomysteries(Rand 18-19). This type of repression causes the society to avoidthe reality of their situation (ONeill 85). Contrary to his upbringing andthe laws of his government, Equality is able to question. He is able to thinkwith some degree of freedom. He is able to move beyond the shackles of hislimited education(Gladstein 27). Because he was born with superiorintelligence, he was able to break free and be his own man. In conclusion,Equality 7-2521 is feared because he has the capability to make major socialchange. This ability lies in his supreme intelligence, self-interest, defiance, and the ability to question. Fear is the underlying cause of all of Equalityshardships. His society is afraid of change and they know that he is capable ofrevolutionizing their world as they know it. This results in Equality beingfeared and perceived as a threat. Their fear evolves into hate and th ey want toshut Equality down. Their intense fear of Equality nearly leads to his death. However, Equality also had the strength to break free from the chains that hadbound him his whole life. He risked his dignity, his safety, and his life andwas rewarded with freedom. Many words have been granted to me, and some arewise, and some are false, but only three are holy: ?I will it!'(Rand109). BibliographyBranden, Nathaniel. My Blanket free essay sample

Money, jewelry, puppies, lovers—most people rank these items high on their lists of â€Å"My Favorite Thing.† But not me. My favorite item in the world is â€Å"Beibei.† I can’t live without her; she’s as important as oxygen to me. Beibei is my blanket, white and soft and sweet-smelling. When I touch Bei-Bei, it’s like touching clothes fresh from the dryer, warm, fluffy, scented with â€Å"Snuggle.† Beibei has always seemed to have a magic power that attracts and soothes me: When I was born, my parents covered me with her to quiet my crying. They say I would tuck my chin into Beibei’s folds and grip her corners in my tiny fingers. Even now, I find it almost impossible to sleep without Beibei. One time, I forgot to take Beibei when I traveled to Australia. Every night was a nightmare. I didn’t enjoy that trip. I love Beibei’s smell; it keeps me calm and happy. When they smell her, they throw her across the room. The only person who agrees with me is my brother. He loves Beibei’s smell because he once had a blanket, too. Unfortunately, it fell apart. Sometimes, I share Beibei’s smell with him. Even though I love the smell, I want my family to accept Beibei. So I decided to wash her. (It took me a week to make this decision.) My mother was so happy and volunteered to help. I had two rules, however. First, Beibei can’t be washed in the washing machine. She needs to be washed by hands or she’ll fall apart. Second, Beibei can’t be thrown into the dryer or she’ll shrink. After Beibei was cleaned, my family finally accepted her. No one throws Beibei away and treats her like a pernicious disease. Beibei—my blanket—is my favorite item in the world. I can’t live without her. She’s a part of my body. When she hurts, I feel pain, too.

Loving Ones Self essays

Loving One's Self essays One day, my friend Samantha and I were walking through a mall. I had just turned 17, and my grandparents sent me some birthday money to spend. Samantha and I went shopping that day. We entered various stores, either purchasing or just glancing around. We carried bags of purchases in and out of stores, but at this mall they had a policy that I had never heard of. When we entered stores, we had to put our bags of purchases from other stores behind the counter of the cashier. Sam and I were surprised at this. We asked the employees at each store why we must do this, unsure of this policy. They all told us the same thing, store policy. We did as we were asked and continued to walk around the store. We saw other groups of kids our age come in, and the same thing was done as well. As all of this was happening, two adults, older than us, more likely to be in their thirties, walked in as they pleased. They held their bags in their hands the whole time they were in the store, no q uestions asked. Many adults walked in without a problem. I couldnt understand what the meaning of this was. Little did I know I was facing a social oppression I was unaware of called adultism. Adultism is the oppression of young people that happens from the day they are born. It is based on age and is presented by the attitudes of adults who surround young people, such as teachers and parents. Adultism can result, or be expressed through many things, such as stereotyping young adults as lazy, mean, angry, and silly, not including young people into decisions made at home and in the classroom, and the failure of supporting young adults development by not being a positive influence or putting in time to talk to us and see what is going on in our lives today. Memmis theory of racism can be applied to adultism as well. There are many situations in which people face the same prejudices for being young adults tha...

KU Consulting - Case Study Example Moreover, the company’s surroundings and equipments used for the manufacturing process are also old-fashioned, technology-deprived and unhealthy as well. Consequently, the company with its obsolete plant and pathetic surroundings fails to satisfy the US safety and environmental standards. Contextually, the company is required to improve and upgrade its plants and equipments substantially in order to ensure greater profitability along with increasing production of quality products. Competitiveness of Albatross Anchor 1. Cost A) Cost of Production Cost of production can be sub-divided into two general categories namely, fixed costs and variable costs which accumulatively represent the value of total costs. Different companies operate in a market place; however they can be distinguished upon their level of cost efficiency examining their variable and fixed cost attributes which further determine their production efficiency. For instance, a higher level of cost-efficiency can be d etermined with the assistance of a comparatively lower cost of production. Contextually, Albatross’ current manufacturing costs of mushroom anchors and snag hook anchors are accounted to be $8.00 per pound and $11.00 per pound respectively. It is in this context that the company charges the same per unit as that of its competitors. Notably, the profit margin of the company in certain instances is recorded to be approximately 35 percent less on its outputs produced. The major cause behind the limitation of the company to earn adequate profit can be identified with reference to its operational inefficiencies (Article Directory, 2012). B) Economies of Scale in Material Purchasing The company purchases the required raw materials in bulk from its suppliers that help in acquiring advantages in terms of discounts. The bulk purchases of the raw materials also assist the company to attain competitive advantages from economies of scale. However, the current limitations of the company h as been witnessed to incur large volumes of wastes as the raw materials purchased in bulk remain unused for a long time period owing to its inefficient and time consuming production process. Hence, the company can avail the benefits of bulk purchase if it is able to produce products at faster rates (Byrns, 2001). C) Cost of Raw Materials Sitting Idle In the Warehouse The production process of the company is witnessed to be quite time-consuming, as a result of which, the only small units of outputs are produced at a given period of time. This leads toward increased volumes of unused raw materials. Consequently, such activities contribute towards an increase in costs as well as wastage of raw materials to a substantial extent. In such circumstances the company should strive to avoid the unnecessary costs associated with the raw materials and its deterioration. The company can thus invest in productive equipments and raw materials preserving efficient inventory system that can ultimate ly enhance the production process, rather than investing in unnecessary purchases of raw materials which are kept idle for a long period of time. D) Cost of Finished Goods Sitting Idle In the Warehouse The company’s warehouses are located far away from the main production area that contributes towards an increase in the carrying costs and thereby consumes substantial time and efforts of the

Business financial management - Essay Example In the year 2004, this amount increased by about 9%, while in 2005 it fell by 19%. This suggests that this amount responded as the sum of long-term debt fluctuated. Also, the company's gearing policy, as suggested by above ratio is to maintain a mixed structure of capital and rely on equity funds more than the borrowed capital, because debt demands fixed payment of interest to the lenders whereas dividends are decided by the management according to their future plans. The gearing ratio of Baa plc reveals that the company's debt at market value is about 95% of the total funds invested by the shareholders. It also means that the company has kept the level of debt slightly below the equity capital so as to avoid interest payments. Koch and Shenoy (1999, p18) posit that, "an increase in leverage due to a debt offering will initially provide more cash for possible over investment, but over time the higher interest expense will decrease the cash available for over investment". Hence, the company might have adopted this strategy to keep the interest payment at a minimum level. Great Expectations Essay Example for Free

Great Expectations Essay Great Expectations by Charles Dickens is a novel that focuses on the life of Philip Pirrip and his expectations. Throughout the book these expectations change and as they do, the reader comes to realise the key theme of how a characters upbringing and environment can dehumanise them. This essay will examine this key theme and how it demonstrates and helps the reader understand Pips growth as a character.  Initially, Pip is a very compassionate and sensitive character. We see this right from the start as the first scene describes him at his families grave crying. The reason for this behaviour at this stage of the book is Pips sister and guardian Mrs Joe Gargery. She concluded by throwing me- I often served her as a connubial missile-  This quote shows that Pip feels in most ways inadequate to his sister and that this domination is the reason for his sensitive and compassionate appearance at this stage of the book.  However, when Pip receives his expectations from Mr Jaggers, and he moves into lodging with Herbert, this domination is no longer valid. As Pip falls deeper and deeper into debt with his flippant spending, he moves further away from Joe and his old home. This gap becomes more apparent after Mrs Joes funeral, when Pip has an awkward conversation with his used to be good friend Biddy. In this conversation Pip presents himself as much more of a selfish and uncompassionate young man: Biddy, said I in a virtuously self-asserting manner, I must request to know what you mean by this?  This quote demonstrates Pips growth as a character as it shows the speed at which he has changed into more arrogant and self-righteous Pip since his childhood. It helps the reader understand the theme of how a characters upbringing and environment can dehumanise them, by showing that in his new, wider-boundary environment, Pip has become somewhat dehumanised. This dehumanisation is demonstrated in this conversation, as Pips manner is made to seem selfish and arrogant to underline the gap between Pips humanised place of upbringing and his somewhat dehumanised state in London. After Mrs Joes death, Pip seems more compassionate and thoughtful. This is because his visit back to his place of birth has helped him realise the change that he has undergone while he has been away by showing him the emotional distance he has put between himself and his family, and the consequences these distances have had on his relationships with his friends and family back home. This compassionate change is reinforced when he sets up Herberts job in a bid to see his friend more financially stable. I did really cry in good earnest when I went to bed, to think that my expectations had done some good to somebody.  This quote shows that Pip has realised the main theme of how a characters environment and upbringing can dehumanise them, by acting in this compassionate and thoughtful way. Also by referring to Herbert as somebody at the end of this quote, Pip shows the reader that he does not believe that his expectations have done himself that much good. In conclusion, Pip reacted throughout the novel towards his environment and upbringing in both negative and in the end positive ways. At the beginning of the novel, he seemed a very modest and sensitive young boy. However when he receives his expectations this marks the beginning of the changes and dehumanisation that he undergoes whilst he is in London. Thankfully though, after his experience at Mrs Joes funeral Pip realises these changes that he has undergone and endeavours to be more compassionate and thoughtful. This shows the reader that Pip has almost completed a full circle of growth, in terms of his behaviour in relation to his upbringing and environment, and this was reinforced by the main theme of how a characters upbringing and environment can dehumanise them.

Educating Rita by Willy Russell Essay -- A Play By Willy Russell

Educating Rita by Willy Russell â€Å" How do the characters of Frank and Rita change throughout the play and what is Russell’s purpose of using the technique?† Educating Rita is a play written by Willy Russell who was born in Liverpool, Whiston. â€Å"I really don’t want to write plays which are resigned, menopausal, despairing and whining. I don’t want to use any medium as a platform for displaying the smallness and hopelessness of man.† Willy Russell wrote Educating Rita as a comedy, he wanted to write a funny play to be watched and not to be studied. Coming from a working class family and society, he witnessed a deep injustice in the way lower classes were treated. Even though people who were working class had wonderful qualities, they were often regarded as worthless. In Educating Rita there are two classes, the lower class that is represented by Rita and the upper class represented by Frank. Russell reveals that although both characters come from different classes, they can both learn from each other. In this play there are only two characters. Although many other people are important to the play, Rita and Frank are the central characters. Rita is a 26-year-old woman who has decided to take a course in English Literature at the Open University. Frank, who is in his early fifties, is Rita’s tutor at the University. From the first opening scene we immediately see that Frank has a drinking problem, as he hides bottles of alcohol behind books in his study. Frank is in his study on the phone to his girlfriend to whom we can see he does not like much â€Å"†¦yes just pop off and put your head in the oven†¦Ã¢â‚¬ At the start of Act 1 Frank shows that he is uninterested in Rita, prejudges her and thinks that she ... ... one she leaves behind. She does pay a price, by leaving Danny and not having a baby yet, she gets what she want’s, an education. In the play, education is portrayed as a game when they are in the university – not going there for the need of an education but to acquire the lifestyle that an ‘educated’ person would so. Frank doesn’t know this game, but Rita does and at the end of the play she realises what it has done to her. At the beginning of the play she is an ‘uneducated’ woman, who knows little about academic things but has a lot of experience about life. She doesn’t value the knowledge which she already has much. She throws away her old life and what she gets back - Frank thinks- is much less valuable. But to Rita, education is a way out of mediocrity into a superior lifestyle. Database Management Systems Essay

While the database management system terminology has become widespread in India, there is a vast space for the adoption of the systems. The market potential still has a significant amount of spread to increase market share. A computer database is a repository of structured data or information and a database management system is a collection of programs that allows storage and retrieval of this data efficiently. Database management systems have undergone significant changes over the last thirty years. Starting with IBM’s IMS, a hierarchical database management system, in the early 1970s to the recent grid computing relational database management system – Oracle, the database technology has undergone a substantial technological change. During the last decade, relational management system or a derivative of it has become a de facto standard of the industry. ANSI SQL has become the standard query language to interact with any DBMS, though each vendor has its own extension to the standard SQL. (The Indian Express Limited) According to Gartner, in 2008, the Indian DBMS market was worth around $194 million and is expected to grow by 20% in 2010 over 2009. It expects the Indian DBMS market size to reach $233 million in 2010. According to a Forrester Research report, the open-source database market stands at $850 million and is expected to grow by more than 40%, to $1. billion, by 2011. Though small in comparison with the $16 billion commercial database market, it is still a significant feat considering most open-source databases bear no licensing costs. (Gartner) The size, growth, and sheer desire to gain a competitive edge lured global DBMS vendors to India. They have opened offices, signed local partners, and translated their software – and they are finding success. Driven by the inherent need for businesses of all kinds to manage their information, Indian database management system (DBMS) software vendors support customers in a large variety of markets. â€Å"From an Indian market perspective, there is still a long way for all vendors to go. The market potential still has a considerable amount of spread to increase market-share,† says Anil Menon, Country Manager, Software Group Channels, IBM India/South Asia.
